Established in 2007, Splatsin Development Corporation manages the economic interests of the Splatsin First Nations throughout the Secwepemcúl̓ecw (Shuswap). Yucwmenlúcwu (Caretakers of the Land) LLP is a full-service Heritage, Environmental, and Forestry resource management company based in Enderby, BC. CURRENT OPPORTUNITY:

 The Junior Archaeologist will work closely with and report directly to the Senior Archaeologist, providing essential support in both field and office tasks. This role includes assisting with fieldwork, documenting archaeological sites, and contributing to lab and office activities. The position offers a hands-on opportunity to gain experience and develop skills in archaeological practices within a collaborative and dynamic environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Senior Archaeologist with fieldwork, including identifying, recording, and documenting archaeological sites.
  • Assist under supervision in the cleaning, identification, and cataloging of archaeological materials recovered in the field.
  • Participate in excavations, Preliminary Field Reconnaissance, and site monitoring activities as required.
  • Provide office and lab support, including maintaining the archaeology lab and ensuring field equipment is in good order.
  • Compile background information for projects, including maps, relevant site forms, and project area details, under the direction of the Senior Archaeologist.
  • Digitize field notes compiled during excavations and surveys.
  • Be responsible for data entry on BC Archaeology Branch site forms and assist with the preparation of site form maps.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A completed BA in Archaeology or Anthropology is required; however, third- and fourth-year undergraduates will be considered, particularly those who have completed an archaeology field school or RISC training and are committed to pursuing a career in archaeology.
  • Prior field experience in British Columbia is essential, with a strong preference for candidates familiar with the archaeological practices of the BC Interior.
  • Demonstrated experience working with First Nations communities is a valuable asset.
  • A foundational understanding of the BC Heritage Conservation Act is beneficial, ensuring compliance with provincial regulations and standards.
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license is required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, as well as familiarity with data management systems.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Field and office environment.
  • Potential for occasional overnight stays, as the role requires.

TOTAL REWARDS:

  • Salary Range: $50,000 – $75,000, based on skill set and experience.
