CURRENT OPPORTUNITY:

Reporting into the Heritage Department Director, the Senior Archaeologist will lead and oversee fieldwork and office-based activities related to archaeological projects within Splatsin territory. This role involves holding primary responsibility for securing and managing permits under the BC Heritage Conservation Act, ensuring that all associated reports and documentation adhere to the stringent standards set by the BC Archaeology Branch.

As the primary field supervisor, the Senior Archaeologist will coordinate field teams, manage resources, and ensure the successful execution of projects. This is a key position within the department, with the successful candidate playing a pivotal role in the stewardship and preservation of cultural heritage within the region.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, implement and manage a Splatsin First Nation archaeology permit system in collaboration with the Heritage Department Director.
  • Apply for heritage inspection, investigation and alteration permits under the terms of the provincial Heritage Conservation Act.
  • Supervise all projects resulting from archaeology permits.
  • Review and respond to external Heritage Conservation Act permits and resulting permit reports.
  • Provide technical assistance to staff in report writing and ensure that any internal HCA permitted reports meet the standards of the BC Archaeology Branch.
  • Mentor junior staff members and organize training programs such as RISC, first aid and safety courses.
  • Assist the Heritage Department Director in the management of scheduling and budgeting of department projects.
  • Carry out the duties of Field Director as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of a BA in archaeology or anthropology with a concentration in archaeology. An MA in archaeology is preferred.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience conducting archaeological fieldwork including Archaeological Impact Assessments (AIA’s), excavations and archaeological surveys.
  • An associate or professional member of the BCAPA (British Columbia Association of Professional Archaeologists).
  • Must meet the requirements of the BC Archaeology Branch for Field Director section and be familiar with all policies and bulletins.
  • Familiarity with the archaeology of the Interior Plateau, and able to hold a Heritage Conservation Act permit.
  • Previous experience working with First Nations is an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with writing and editing skills required for technical reports.
  • Familiarity with Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Class 5 Drivers License.

  • Field and office environment.
  • Potential for occasional overnight stays, as the role requires.

  • Salary Range: $90,000 – $120,000, based on skill set and experience.
