Overview
The Adams Lake Indian Band Natural Resources Department is seeking Stewardship Technicians. Reporting to and under the direction of the Natural Resources Director, the Stewardship Technicians are responsible for performing various duties which include archaeology, cultural heritage, environmental resource, fisheries, and guardian program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Archaeology:
- Observing, preserving and monitoring archaeological sites in an organized, effective and efficient manner.
- Archaeological monitoring, and screening of Archaeological sites.
- Working on field excavations or digs, usually as part of a team, using a range of digging equipment.
- Surveying sites using a variety of methods, including field walking, geophysical surveys and aerial photography.
- Recording sites using drawings, detailed notes and photography.
- Checking planning applications and identifying any possible archaeological impact.
- Assess archaeological sites for resource management, development, or conversation purposes, and recommend methods for site protection.
- Identify Cultural Heritage Sites (CMT depressions, land markings, pictographs, etc.). Experience at identifying archaeological artifacts or material relevant to job at hand.
- Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer) completing fieldwork and documentation (survey and site forms, GPS/GIS data, and data entry as needed).
Forestry/Cultural Heritage:
- Assist Forest Technician and Forester in all aspects of forestry work.
- Learn and record tree and vegetation identification.
- Describing basic ecosystems characteristics (including topography, vegetation, soil, climate, habitat, bio geoclimatic zones and stream assessments.
- Assisting in cut-block and road layout.
- Identify Cultural Heritage Sites (CMT depressions, land markings, pictographs etc).
- Completing silviculture surveys.
- Assist with the layout of brushing areas.
- Assisting in the management of tree planting contracts.
- Identify traditionally used plants/animals.
- Power saw Operation.
- Various Power equipment certification. boat operators, atv, etc.
- Carry out labour intensive work such as brushing, spacing and planting.
Environmental Resource
- Assist outside agencies on environmental assessment and related projects.
- Assist outside agencies writing baseline and impact assessment and reports.
- Construction and Regulatory compliance monitoring.
- Aquatic and terrestrial habitat monitoring.
- Environmental management programming.
- Participate in multi-disciplinary projects and work closely with biologists, hydrologists, ecologists, social scientists, engineers and other project specialists.

Fisheries
- Inventory of communal fishery equipment and supplies.
- Participate in the repair & cleaning of the communal fishing boat and equipment.
- Shop for and purchase communal fishing supplies & nets. (On-going).
- Daily catch supervision duties of the communal fishery harvests.
- Participate in stream walks and catch surveys.
Guardian
- Collect various pieces of data for Guardian purposes.
- Use Geo Keeper App to collect potential information on environmental issues.
- This is a new aspect to be developed in the future.
- Training in the info gathering and provincial laws particular to enforcement.
General Duties
- Assisting Public Works staff
- Fencing
- Assisting Lands Department
- Greenhouse
- Firewood
- Community Camp
- Any other duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Minimum grade 12 education or equivalent experience.
- Experience working in a First Nations environment.
- Excellent listening, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Diplomacy, tact and confidentiality in dealing with a variety of people and information.
- Reliability and dependability.
- Self motivated and an ability to work independently.
- Superior organizational and time management skills, with the ability to set priorities for self and others within a team oriented work environment.
- Ability to take initiative and achieve results.
- Ability to carry out multiple assignments concurrently.
- Familiar with all safe work procedures and Workers’ Compensation Board Occupational Health and Safety Regulation.
- Ability to be aware of surroundings and ensure all potential hazards are noted and observed.
- Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer) completing fieldwork and documentation (survey and site forms, GPS/GIS data, and data entry as needed).
- Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s License required. (Class 7 may be acceptable)
- Reliable transportation with valid insurance (an asset)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS ADAMS LAKE INDIAN BAND JOB POSTING AMENDED – STEWARDSHIP TECHNICIAN – CASUAL ON-CALL
Work can be strenuous as it includes a lot of walking, carrying equipment and excavation with shovel. Must be able to work on foot in different or changing environments for extended periods of time. Work in physically demanding terrain using compass and GPS and able to take field notes.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in both an indoor and outdoor environment. Must be able to safely work around and with heavy machinery. Occasionally exposed to insects, fumes and varying weather conditions, which may be extreme from hot and cold or wet, but still able to perform assigned tasks.
EQUIPMENT AND SOFTWARE
Microsoft Office Suite – Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
Compass, GPS, PPE (Personal protective equipment) Hi-vis vest, hard hat, steel toed boots, screens and tripod, shovel, trowel, radios/SPOT (satellite personal tracker), Apple iPad and camera.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Current Criminal records check with results acceptable to ALIB
- RISC Certificate (copy)

*Please note: a person may start with no certification, and this will be reflected in the wage grid.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Up to four (4) Casual On-Call Positions
- Wage offered will be dependent on education and experience varying between $23.92 – $28.67 per hour.
- Hours per week: up to 37.5 – 40 hours weekly, with some flexibility in hours/days of work.
