THE ORGANIZATION:

Nlaka’pamux Health Service Society’s (NHSS) purpose is to create health and wellness for the Nlaka’pamux Nation. This is done through the management and administration of the holistic well-being of the Nation. NHSS delivers health services both directly and by using mobile, tele, and office health care protocols in a culturally appropriate way and as close to the clients as possible. NHSS is the voice of health for the nation to various stakeholders, including IHA and various levels of government, regarding health issues for the nation. We also continuously look to improve communications within the nation on health and wellness issues.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

Reporting to the Mental Health Manager, the Adult Mental Health & Wellness Counsellor is responsible for providing comprehensive addiction and mental health counselling, education, and support, all in alignment with the NHSS overarching vision. The Counsellor provides holistic therapeutic interventions designed to assist members in attaining and sustaining optimal mental well-being. This role involves close collaboration with other staff members and community partners, ensuring that all responsibilities are carried out in a respectful and culturally sensitive manner. Upholding confidentiality is paramount; therefore, tact and discretion must be exercised in every interaction.

The ideal candidate will be a dedicated professional with a strong commitment to mental health and wellness. They will have extensive experience in delivering culturally sensitive counselling services and excel in building trustful and supportive relationships.

AS THE ADULT MENTAL HEALTH & WELLNESS COUNSELLOR, YOU WILL:

Program Delivery:

  • Provide therapeutic counselling and support, applying a comprehensive range of both Western and Indigenous counselling styles and methodologies tailored to the specific needs of adults.
  • Complete individual client intake process.
  • Counsel adults in developing autonomy in coping with stressors in their lives, building resilience over the long term.
  • Prepare treatment plans, conduct case conferencing, and participate in collaborative case management.
  • Provide referrals to other programs and services, liaising with various partners to promote client health and wellness.
  • Manage individual caseloads and ensure adherence to a continuum of care which includes prevention, intervention, and aftercare.
  • Oversee group loading process including intake/assessments for applicable programming.

Leadership:

  • Provide community education, training, and development of activities related to health and wellness.
  • Serve as a positive role model in promoting healthy lifestyles, adhering to best practices and the code of ethics of the professional association.
  • Engage in continuing education and professional development to keep knowledge, methods, and practices current.
  • Consult with Elders and Knowledge Keepers regarding cultural practices.

Administration:

  • Complete and maintain all client files and recordkeeping including intake assessments, consent/release forms, clinical assessments, progress reports, session notes, timesheets, session reports, treatment plans, case studies, supervision notes, images, group reports/notes, and summary reports.
    • Ensure all documentation adheres to legal guidelines.
  • Create and distribute promotional and educational material and information.
  • Attend required meetings and relevant community engagements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Master’s Degree in Counselling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related health or behavioural science discipline, preferred; or
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Social Work, or behavioural science discipline; or
    • Diploma in Counselling, Addictions, or Human Services.
  • Registered or ability to register with a professional association and registering body associated with the criteria for this position.
  • First Aid & CPR Level 1, as well as a preference for suicide intervention skills.
  • Mental Health First Aid, Assist, trauma informed practice an asset.

Experience & Knowledge:

  • Minimum of 2 to 3 (recent) years direct counselling experience, preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Western and Indigenous therapeutic modalities.
  • Demonstrated working experience with mental health issues such as addictions, trauma, concurrent disorders, grief/loss, and suicide ideation/intent and family violence.
  • Current knowledge in addressing historical and intergenerational trauma, including social determinates and inequities impacting an Indigenous population.
  • Demonstrated expertise as a facilitator in developing, implementing and evaluating interventions and programs.
  • Knowledge of theoretical paradigms for the treatment of addictions with demonstrated knowledge of bio-psychosocial and cultural/spiritual models.
  • Experience working with Indigenous clients in rural, remote, and on-reserve communities preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Nlaka’pamux communities served.
  • May consider equivalent combination of knowledge, education, training, and lived experience that demonstrates competency and the ability to perform the key responsibilities of this position.

  • Familiarity with the Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (BC), the recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and the impacts of these on health, health care, and health care design for Indigenous people.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to apply, an understanding of Indigenous cultural principles and protocols in work situations.
  • Ability to apply a two-eyed seeing approach to balance Western and Traditional Indigenous worldviews.
  • Understanding and ability to practice with Nation based, community driven philosophy.
  • Current knowledge in addressing historical and intergenerational trauma, including social determinates and inequities impacting an Indigenous population.
  • Experience working with Indigenous clients in rural, remote, and on-reserve communities and understanding their inherent challenges and barriers preferred.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Full-time, typically, Monday to Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm
  • Travel within the Nlaka’pamux Nation is required and may include overnight stays
  • Utilizes appropriate service delivery tools such as double encrypted Health Care Zoom technology for virtual client appointments

 CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Must obtain and maintain a Criminal Records Check-Vulnerable Sector (CRRP)
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence with a current and clean driver’s abstract
  • Access to a company vehicle will be provided when required to attend to NHSS business
  • Must be up to date with all required vaccinations
