BRIEF OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Director of Capital Infrastructure, the Excavator Operator/Maintenance Worker effectively provides excavation and maintenance support services in the community. This role requires strong excavator operator and maintenance skills, problem assessment and the ability to perform inspections on a regular basis. The Excavator Operator/Maintenance Worker must be vigilant in excavator operations, process, and reporting to protect the community.

•       Understanding of Aboriginal culture and respect for cultural diversity.

•       Problem solving skills and critical thinking to analyze problems systematically, organize information, find root causes and generate options or solutions.

•       Demonstrated skills in using various power tools and equipment.

•       Strong understanding of safe work practices and WorkSafeBC regulations

•       Strong focus on work safety and promoting safe practices within the department/community.

•       Good organizational and time management skills, ensuring that all deadlines are met.

•       Willingness to complete additional training as directed.

Required:Indigenous Perspective

•       Knowledge and appreciation of working in or with First Nations community and peoples.

Western Ways

•       Minimum of 10-15 years’ excavator operator experience with road building, building foundations, water lines, landscaping and septic systems.

•       Basic use of computer programs for word processing, databases, spreadsheets, email and the internet.

•       Must have a valid driver’s license (BC Class 5 and 1 with air endorsement no restrictions) reliable vehicle and satisfactory driving record (company vehicle may be provided upon approval).

•       Criminal records check (vulnerable sector).

•       Occupational First Aid Level 1 or willing to take.

Preferred:

•       Completion of a recognized Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) program is an asset.

•       Lived or Living Experience working with and in First Nations.

Preference will be given to those of Aboriginal Ancestry – per Section 16(1) of the Canadian Human Rights Act.
