BC First Nations Data Demonstration Projects. Call for Proposals. Closes April 1, 2024. For many years, First Nations in BC have been advancing data sovereignty as a foundational enabler to the right of self-government and self-determination. This includes providing leadership to the development of the national First Nations Data Governance Strategy which calls for the establishment of First Nations Regional Information Governance Centres (RIGCs) across the country. The First Nations Leadership Council (FNLC) has been mandated by resolution to advance a BC First Nations RIGC equipped with the knowledge, skills, and infrastructure needed to serve the information needs of First Nations governments.  A BC First Nations Data Governance Working Group, supported by a technical project team, has been established to lead this effort. The BC RIGC project team is calling for funding proposals from First Nations in BC for demonstration projects. Between 10-15 projects will be funded, with up to two years of funding available per project.

Interested students could take on any number of the elements of this project for their PhD, Master’s, or Honours work (we have projects which could be done at different scales of depth). Tla’amin Nation’s questions require social science and Indigenous-informed research methods, and will be a deep dive into a cross-cutting project that connects food security, climate change, community well-being, climate change. If there are Indigenous students attending or applying to UVic might be interested in taking on this project, please contact: Brian Thom (Anthropology) at [email protected] or Nicole Meier at Tla’amin Nation ([email protected]) for more information! Expression of Interest open until March 31, 2024.
