Position Title: Halq’eméylem Language Instructor
Reports to: Culture and Language Manager
Position Location: Chilliwack BC
Salary: $45.54 – $46.91 per hour
Work Schedule: 10 Hours per week
Start Date: July 2, 2025

In this unique and meaningful position, you’ll help build strong language foundations for students by using a variety of teaching methods that inspire curiosity, confidence, and connection. You’ll collaborate closely with our dedicated Halq’eméylem Language & Heritage Preservationists and work directly with the last fluent speakers to learn, document, and archive precious language and cultural knowledge for future generations.
As a Language Instructor, you won’t just teach — you’ll mentor, guide, and empower. Through immersive classes and dynamic programs, you’ll be instrumental in nurturing new speakers and keeping the Halq’eméylem language alive and thriving within our community.

Responsibilities and Duties:
- Develop lesson plans for children, youth and adult immersion in the Halq’eméylem Language to include culturally relevant activities, songs and practices
- Prepare materials and class activities for learning
- Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet the varying needs of learner’s interests and abilities
- Gather data useful for planning instructional programs, modifying existing programs and communicating with others
- Work with other fluent speakers to learn and formally document the Halqemeylem language and culture through written and recorded means
- Mentor members to speak the Halq’eméylem language to share and build language use and competence
- Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness.
- Continuous learner of the language
- Implement Fulsome Language Testing; Roll out comprehensive language proficiency assessments to evaluate and support Halq’emeylem learners
- Expand Language Classes; Increase the availability of Halq’emeylem classes for all ages, ensuring accessibility and opportunities for fluency
Required Education and Experience
- A member from Skowkale or other Halq’eméylem speaking communities
- Experience in developing and implementing language programs preferred
- Experience working with elders and knowledge holders.
- Experience creating language curriculum and the development of course materials for variable age groups and learning styles preferred
- Satisfactory Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check
- First Nations Language Teacher Certificate is an asset
- Previous teaching experience is an asset
- Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s license
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of the Halq’eméylem language, culture, and protocols
- Belief in the importance of preserving language and enjoy sharing and learning with others
- Strong cultural sensitivity and understanding. Able to build strong relationshipswith elders, adults, children, and youth, built on trust.
- Ability to document and record language information for archiving
- Ability to work as part of a team to establish and maintain effective communication with staff and students
- Intermediate proficiency with computers including Word and Outlook
- Ability to use technology and host zoom/online classes
- Understanding of First Nations cultures.
Working Conditions
- Assisting and supporting in the elder’s home
- Interacting with community members of all age ranges
- Shared work area
